What was said in the immediate aftermath of Kanlı Pazar, while the events were still fresh, bears the marks of the polarization between right and left. The words and statements are like the stones that were thrown. The right openly defended the Sixth Fleet. In the right's view, telling the Sixth Fleet to leave meant handing the country over into Russia's arms. Those who said no to the Sixth Fleet were "lackeys of the Muscovite." For this reason, the patriotic people had put the reds in their place and spoiled their game. What happened in Taksim was "the uprising of the communists, the fury of the patriots." Statements from the period's governor show that, at the level of the state too, those who organized the rally were seen as the guilty party. The organizers were provocateurs, and it was they who caused the events to break out. In these statements, there is no trace whatsoever of any acknowledgment that the attack was organized, that clubs and ribbons had been handed out, or that there had been cooperation with the police. The statements of leftists, meanwhile, bear the marks of the divisions among themselves. The faction of leftists close to TİP, described as "socialist revolutionaries," characterized their attackers as deceived Muslims, and drew attention as well to the junta-minded elements among the rally's participants; the MDD-ists [National Democratic Revolutionaries], for their part, stated that they saw the attack as a fight between those waging a war of independence and those who had sold out to imperialism. The common thread in the leftists' statements is that they had been caught unprepared for the attack. They stated that, from then on, they would exercise their right to self-defense. Intellectuals, as can be seen in Abdi İpekçi's case in particular, drew attention to the "government's" hand in the attack. Although the leftists even supplied the license plates of the vehicles used in the attack, no investigation would be carried out on this matter; Minister of the Interior Faruk Sükan would instead announce the names of 48 people found guilty as a result of the investigation carried out. Yet every one of these 48 people was a leftist. In the aftermath of the events, two people seen holding knives in newspaper photographs were arrested, and a case was opened against 4 people, including these two detainees. According to the state, these 4 people were the sole culprits of Kanlı Pazar.
