Kanlı Pazar — Nationalists, Islamists, and the Left in 1960s Turkey

Kanlı Pazar cover

The book can be thought of as falling into two parts. The first presents a panorama of Turkey's political landscape from the 1960s into the 1970s. It covers the entry of the terms "right" and "left" into Turkey's political vocabulary, the split between nationalists and Islamists, the MDD–SD [National Democratic Revolution–Socialist Revolution] debates, and the transformation leftist youth underwent.

The second recounts Kanlı Pazar, which took place on 16 February 1969: an organized attack by right-wing organizations on a march by leftist youth protesting the U.S. Sixth Fleet, leaving two dead and dozens wounded. Kanlı Pazar was the first in the series of mass killings that would follow one after another in the 1970s.
